Jewish Philosophy- Understanding the Holocaust
In this week’s video on Jewish philosophy, I want to address a subject that is perhaps too complex for a short discussion, yet it is one that weighs heavily on our hearts: understanding the Holocaust. When tragedies of such magnitude occur, we naturally ask why. How could God allow this? Most of us take the approach of humility, recognizing that we simply cannot comprehend God’s infinite ways. However, my teacher, Rabbi Sinai Adler, a survivor of Auschwitz, offered a different and very sobering perspective based on the warnings found in the Torah. He suggested that if we believe the Torah is true, we must look at the consequences it describes for turning away from its path. This is a difficult and troubling concept to process. We will explore these two very different philosophical viewpoints and the implications they have for us today. Join me as we begin to touch upon these profound questions.
